Normal People
Why are they so boring?

I drove 2 freshmen boys up to PA as I was visiting James this weekend. It got me a nearly free tank of gas, but if people would actually talk to me I'd be happy to do it for much less. I managed to get their year and majors out of them (Computer science and Kinesology), but talking about anything else was like pulling teeth. So are you part of any clubs? "no." Umm, do you have any pets? "We had a dog." Any questions about the pets were met with crickets chirping. I tried to launch into horrible gen ed classes and beer stories, but nothing stirred them. We sat mostly silent in the car for more than 3 hours, with the crappy radio on. Don't normal peopl DO anything? I thought most people had some kind of interest in something. Again, this isn't the first time, when I was a JR in college I drove a girl to Manassas, and she said not a word to me the whole time, despite me trying to make polite conversation.

WHAT IS WITH PEOPLE! I HATE NORMAL PEOPLE THEY ARE SOOOOO BORING!

Eh-heh.

I'd argue the point, but I really don't think I can.

I do understand the talking to strangers thing. Slugging to work, most the time I don't feel like talking, I just want to veg out and sleep or think on my own. Being social takes too much effort. Sometimes I feel chatty, but when I'm not and the driver feels like talking, it's just a huge drain for me.

Let's consider the facts....

1) They are freshmen.
2) They are guys.
3) You're female.
4) Not a freshman
5) and hawt.

What's the normal reaction of a freshman male (typically renowned for poor social skills in general) faced with a hot older woman.

Yeah. Sitting quietly was what they probably considered the "safe move."

Well, as freshmen guys they have three default settings:
1) Fuck It
2) Eat It
3) Hide from It

I'll agree with Elkor here: They went with the safest option of their limited choices.

then explain to me the female from so many years ago who was even WORSE about talking? It can't be JUST that they are young and male and therefore brainless.

Keep in mind that, for a male college freshman, a real adult woman talking to them in a noncondescending fashion, simply because she was interested in what they might have to say, is something that Does Not Happen.

By being friendly to them, you moved right off the cognitive map, into the black space on the edge, traditionally marked "here there be dragons" or other synonym for "unknown = danger."

They sound like my brother, and I've known him for 20 years. I still get the single syllable responses from him! Unless of course he's trying to find alcohol...then he's my best friend. Maybe next time you should just try to liquor them up first ;)
